RBHA provides a continuum of services to meet the needs of adults experiencing behavioral health issues in the City of Richmond and across the region. We understand that individuals and families may have multiple needs and co-occurring behavioral health challenges that require a comprehensive approach to treatment and support.
Across Virginia, hundreds of people die every year from drug overdoses – nearly 80% of those deaths involve prescription opioid drugs or heroin. There is hope. Treatment works and recovery is possible. Through case management and education, intensive outpatient treatment, office-based opioid treatment (OBOT), or intensive residential treatment, RBHA is prepared to assist individuals along their journey of recovery. RBHA utilizes the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to determine the best treatment placement for individuals with substance use and/or co-occurring mental health issues. Outpatient Services
Case Management Services
The core service provided at RBHA is case management. Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Case Management Services includes assisting individuals with accessing treatment and support for their substance use needs, co-occurring mental health issues, and/or medical needs as well as accessing supports related to employment and housing.
Comprehensive case management services include, but are not limited to:
- Individualized, person-centered treatment planning
- Coordination of services, on-going assessment of needs, monitoring of services and supports, and supportive counseling
- Referrals and linkages to resources such as transportation, housing, vocational and employment programs, and medical & dental care
- Collaboration with treatment providers (such as a psychiatrist or medical professional) to monitor needs and progress
Women’s Services
RBHA’s Women Services Team provides help and hope to pregnant and parenting women. Our programs offer gender-responsive, trauma-informed care. Women’s Services include, but are not limited to, case management services, educational and supportive treatment groups, life skills groups, and parenting education.
Additional services include child-minding and transportation for groups and service meetings, referrals for developmental screenings for children, sober social family activities, and peer recovery support. Through person-centered assessment and service planning, Women’s Services staff will assist with connecting women and their children to any needed community service or resource.
Outpatient Treatment (Chelsea Hill location)
RBHA provides Outpatient Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment for adults at our Chelsea Hill location. We provide individual, group, family, and couples counseling to meet the needs of the individuals and families we serve. Outpatient Services are a minimum of 1 hour per week. Intensive Outpatient Treatment (Chelsea Hill location)
RBHA provides Intensive Outpatient Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment for adults through individual and group therapy. Intensive Outpatient Treatment combines individual and group therapy for a minimum total of 9 hours a week over 3 days a week. Treatment includes trauma-based therapy, skills-based work, and relapse prevention.

Office Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT)
RBHA offers individuals with opioid addiction the option of medication-assisted treatment via buprenorphine. In addition to medication, individuals receiving treatment in the OBOT Clinic receive individual and group counseling by clinicians and peer specialists, solution-focused brief interventions, care coordination, and monitoring of medication compliance via urine drug screens. In conjunction with OBOT services, clients are able to receive primary medical care services to address other physical health diagnoses. Clients also have the option of picking up medications from our contracted, in-house pharmacy.
Pregnant women receive priority treatment via suboxone (during their pregnancy).
Recovery Plus
Recovery Plus is an Opioid Treatment Program offering medication assisted treatment (MAT) – methadone - for individuals diagnosed with opioid dependence. RBHA utilizes the American Society of Addition Medicine (ASAM) Criteria to determine if an individual meets criterion for this type of outpatient treatment. In addition to treatment with medication, Recovery Plus offers individual therapy and group counseling sessions. This is a voluntary program that complies with all local and federal regulations.

Peer Support
RBHA is proud to employ many individuals with lived experience in the behavioral health domains. Peer support specialists are people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse. Peer support services can effectively extend the reach of treatment beyond the clinical setting into the everyday environment of those seeking a successful, sustained recovery process.
