Your child will also have the opportunity to work with a counselor who provides therapy once a week. The RBHA calls this person a clinician. The clinician has a Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a counseling field, and has been specifically trained to provide therapy. Some clinicians are licensed by the state to provide therapy, and many others are receiving clinical supervision and working towards becoming licensed.
In individual therapy, your child focus on finding solutions to problems and overcoming challenges that may be preventing them from learning new skills and changing behaviors. They will create small, achievable goals and work towards those goals gradually to ensure lasting success.
In group counseling, your child will benefit from participating in discussions and activities with his peers in the following content areas:
Rapport Building
Feelings
Communication
Self-Esteem
Problem Solving
Anger Management
Friendship
As he or she sees other children growing and learning in groups, the modeling and role-playing will reinforce positive skills and promote change. He or she will learn to get along with others and the groups will foster a group of peers who can support behavioral change in other settings.
