Mental Health Services For Children
Individual and Family Therapy
Individual and family therapy provides the child/family with outpatient therapy that assists children between the ages of 5 and 17.5 years old with identified Serious Emotional Disturbance, Major Mental Illness, and/or who are deemed At Risk of developing more serious issues/concerns. The goal is to restore the child and/or family to a previous level of adaptive functioning or to an improved level of functioning that can be maintained consistently. Goals and objectives are developed collaboratively with the child and family to identify and address specific emotional, behavioral, and/or psychiatric signs and symptoms that create barriers to the child’s ability to function in school, community, and/or home environments.
A licensed mental health professional provides these services. Eligible Consumers must also receive case management services within the Child and Family Mental Health Unit. Consumers are usually referred for this service through the weekly Case Review Team Meetings, a team of Child and Family clinical supervisors, or by their assigned Case Managers. Outpatient Therapy typically occurs weekly for a period of approximately one (1) hour either individually with the identified consumer or with the consumer and his/her parent or family members. As the consumer progresses in his/her treatment goals and objectives, the frequency may be adjusted to biweekly or monthly outpatient therapy sessions. Consumers are provided with an initial Outpatient Assessment, which includes an updated psychosocial history and addresses the presenting problems, signs and symptoms, family mental health history, trauma history, mental status exam, and identification of needs and goals. Eligible Consumers receive an array of therapeutic interventions, determined by the consumer’s diagnosis and needs, and rooted primarily in evidence-based practices.
